Why learn music?

The benefits of learning music are very well documented.
For young people, it improves academic skills, develops physical skills and cultivates social skills. It can help self-esteem and teaches teamwork, co-operation and communication. Most of all, it should be enjoyable and fun!

Learn an Instrument

At Coda, near Christchurch, on the Dorset/Hampshire border. We offer music tuition for all ages and abilities in piano, strings, woodwind, guitars, drums and vocals. Lessons can be one-to-one, in pairs or groups – depending on preference and budget. Classes are offered at a variety of times – just get in touch for current availability.

Why learn at Coda?

At Coda, we pride ourselves on the quality of our tuition and facilities. All of our tutors are highly qualified and experienced and will tailor lessons to your requirements, whether you wish to learn for exam grades or just play for enjoyment.

Our tutors have 100% exam success with a high percentage of high merits and distinctions. Students are entered for exams at the tutor’s discretion and only once they are ready. Coda Music Centre is an exam centre for both Trinity and RGT examinations.

Our facilities are unique – with a purpose-built Centre set in a beautiful rural location. Our site is a former Victorian dairy farm, which has been tastefully and sympathetically converted to provide twelve fully equipped music rooms and larger ensemble/performance space as well as a welcoming self-service cafe, which is ideal for a pre or post lesson coffee or an ideal space to relax if you are waiting on-site whilst your child has tuition.

Bursary scheme

In order to support students who may have difficulty in affording the full cost of lessons or music therapy sessions, Coda Music and Arts Trust has set aside modest funds for a bursary scheme. The bursary fund is subject to funds being available and is always the subject of fundraising and appeals. If you would like advice on how to apply for a bursary, please get in touch!

Performance Opportunities

To support and compliment lessons, we offer several performance opportunities in the Coda Social for our students. Performing is a key part of learning and progressing as a musician and these sessions are a great way to take your first steps in public performance or in building your confidence and repertoire.

All of these performance opportunities are great ways to develop confidence (especially when exams are coming up) and they all take place on a Friday between 7pm – 9pm in The Coda Social.

If you would enjoy performing at one of these evenings, or think you might benefit from the opportunity to play in front of a friendly audience, please let your tutor or the Coda office know. You can email us on contact@coda.org.uk  and we can allocate a slot.

Everyone is welcome to come along to any of these events as an audience member to enjoy the performances and support the performers. These events are free and open to all – keep an eye on our Facebook page or website calendar for dates and details.

This TED Talk outlines how playing an instrument benefits your brain

It’s also never too late to learn. At Coda, we have a current student who started learning to play the Saxophone in his late 60s. Now in his 70s, he leads his own jazz band and plays regular gigs in support of Coda! For older people the benefits are just as impressive. Research shows that playing music lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety levels and even strengthens your immunological response, making you more resistant to viruses. It can also be an enjoyable social activity that keeps minds active – especially important in building and maintaining social connections in older age and providing protection from mind-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Music Mark – The UK Association for Music Education

Here’s a great little short film from the BBC outlining 10 things you should know about the benefits of music – although aimed at schools, the facts are relevant to everyone! The benefits featured in this film are based on a booklet ‘10 Things Schools Should Know About Learning Music’ from Music Mark – The UK Association for Music Education.
