Your Bank Holiday Update from Coda
Your Bank Holiday Update from Coda

We hope that you are all remaining safe and well and enjoying the beautiful Bank Holiday weather.

We’re here to keep you up to speed with all the news from Coda Music Trust and music content for you to enjoy.

Thank you to everyone who completed our reopening survey in last week’s update. We will be taking a look at the results with interest and they will help inform our plans regarding both online tuition and timescales for a future phased reopening.

We are discussing lots of ideas with tutors and group leaders for delivering tuition and ensembles online and we will be in touch as and when the details are confirmed.

Thank you to everybody who joined us for our absolutely fabulous Livestream gig from The Coasters (Hayley & Paul) on Friday.

It was so lovely to see our friends again and enjoy their soulful sounds – and it  raised an incredible £280 for Coda!

We have now raised over £2000 from our Live Stream events – thanks to your generosity!

If you missed Paul & Hayley’s live stream, you can now see it on Coda’s YouTube channel click here where you can now also see all of our previous Facebook Live gigs from Stephen, Jonny, Owain, Guy and James as well as The Gramophone Hour hosted by Stuart.

This Friday 29th May, we are excited to welcome our friends Megan & Ruth of Scuttleshake, who will be performing for us.

Megan and Ruth are one half of the south west based band Scuttleshake, who will be performing a Facebook live gig for Coda.

In their own words, Scuttleshake are “four women, singing, harmonising, picking and playing the fool… performing covers of Americana and folk songs from both the UK and around the world.”

The usual festival season has been cancelled but that’s not stopping them from performing. Although the full band can’t make it, Ruth and Megan will do their best to fill the gap.

“We hope everyone will enjoy a lively performance about, life, death, travel, love, fun, breakups, getting back together and the occasional banjo joke!”

Join us online on Friday 29th May at 7pm
and support us through the ‘donate’ button on our Facebook Live stream.

Looking ahead to next week, on Friday 5th June, our Livestream gig will be with our fabulous piano tutor Vivienne Kirk.

As ever, Stuart Jebbitt has been busy this week –  he has recorded a new self-Isolation play-along for Guitar and Ukulele, as well as a performance of ‘Crazy Love’ for your entertainment!

Kieran Procter is one of our wonderful volunteers at Coda, having worked with our Beautiful Sounds sessions for adults with Learning Disabilities for several years.

He has been using isolation to get creative and asked people to send him images of how lockdown has affected them.
Using those messages, he has put together this brilliant music video. Well done Kieran!

Our exceptionally talented tutor Stephanie Liney has been performing a selection of soothing music on Celtic Harp, inspired by the British Coastlines, on Livestream.

This is as part of her “Songs Of The Seals” Livestream Series for ‘One City One Light’ and you can see the whole series on YouTube. Click here to enjoy Stephanie’s ‘Coastal Inspirations’ and to see the whole series click here.

Lockdown is granting us all unprecedented access to some of the world’s biggest stars, as many of them take to social media to teach us their secrets.

So if you’ve ever wanted to learn guitar from Johnny Marr or Bass from John Taylor, now’s the time!

As part of a recent Youtube series by Fender, The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr (one of the most acclaimed and brilliant guitarists in rock music), has given a lesson on how to play The Smiths classic song The Headmaster Ritual.

John Taylor, one of pop’s funkiest bassmen has also taken to Social Media for his his ‘Stone Love Bass Odyssey’ lockdown series, where he breaks down Duran Duran’s biggest hits.

John’s clearly loving these tutorials and so are we. To check out the episode on the song Planet Earth click here and for Girls On Film click here   … and you can find even more on the Duran Duran Youtube channel click here.

Record-breaking beatboxer SK Shlomo is hosting weekly mass beatbox lessons to empower kids and raise money for NHS Charities Together.

In this global experiment in music and technology, kids and their grownups are learning mind-blowing beatboxing skills, finding their true voice and creating songs of their own.

Over six weeks, this huge community project aims to create a ‘Homeschool Anthem’ during the interactive livestreams.

The lessons go live each Thursday at 2pm on YouTube. This will be week 4 but you can see the 3 lessons so far (which also include guest appearances by K T Tunstall, Jason Mraz and Bill Bailey) on Shlomo’s YouTube channel click here
