Early Years

Coda Music’s creative music and dance programmes

Coda Music brings joy into the lives of children and young people - helping build creativity and communication skills, enhancing collaboration and self esteem and building both mental and physical co-ordination skills.

Children who attend Early Years music programmes and then go on to take up an instrument generally make better progress than those who have not had the benefit of this creative grounding.

Our unique Early Years classes are lively, varied and fun for everyone - providing a structured but informal framework in music and dance learning and development for children aged from 0 -7 and led by teachers who have a wealth of experience in this very specialist area. All our classes are held at the Coda Music Centre and are supported by volunteer assistants.

Coda Young Music Makers Programme

Coda Music Babies - (0 to 20 months) is a new Coda programme engaging children from the very earliest age - and their parents/carers - in enjoyable music activities. Learn to relax with your baby and together enjoy musical games, singing and rhymes with a strong pulse. Circle games, bouncing activities and music and movement increase musical interaction between you – and help increase your baby’s concentration.

Very tiny babies respond to rhythm and pitch and our lessons are aimed to give very young children musical experiences through all their senses. All of these classes are very popular and we advise parents to contact us early about vacancies and waiting lists.

Coda Music Toddlers - (18 months 3 years) who attend in groups of 6 to 10 children with their parents/carers. Each weekly 30 minute class provides a lively and creative introduction to music with songs, simple percussion instruments, dance and circle games, movement to various rhythms and pulses, and games with soundmakers and soft toys.

Coda Music Tots - (3 - 4 years) weekly 30 minute lessons offered to pre-school children, in groups of up to 10 children (pre-attending the Coda Music Babies or Tots classes is not necessary). Parents/carers are welcome to stay. Children continue to develop their musical abilities and start to learn how to read music. Good pitching skills are promoted, essential for playing any instrument where sensitivity to tuning is needed. Rhythm and listening activities are encouraged, as is the concept of developing a child’s musical memory.

Coda Music Minors (4- 5 year olds) and Coda Music Majors (5-6 year olds) provide further musical development for children of infant school age (from 4 years up to 6+). Children with little experience can start in a Coda Music Minors Reception class where they catch up on the Kodály approaches that we use. Weekly classes each last for 35 or 40 minutes (depending on age of children) and embrace a wide variety of musical activities. As children progress through classes they extend their abilities to sing confidently, to keep up rhythmic accompaniments to songs and rhymes, to improvise and compose their own melodies - and to develop the co-ordination necessary to go on to learn an instrument through Coda Young Music Makers Programme.

Pupils’ progress is measured with informal assessments, and reports are prepared for parents of the Coda Music Minors and Majors at the end of the academic year.

Baby Ballet 3-5years Classes offer an opportunity for imaginative and expressive movement. The younger pupils explore ideas initially while the older ones will consciously develop ideas, interests and physical co-ordination. The stimuli are drawn from a range and variety of cultures aimed at giving children a wider understanding of the world. Scarves, streamers, instruments and other resources are used to extend and enhance movement.
